Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between megabits (Mbps) and gigabits (Gbps)?
The terms “megabits” and “gigabits” both refer to units of digital information used to measure internet connection speeds. The higher the number, the faster the internet will feel to you in the end. One megabit is equal to one million bits (1,000,000 bits). One gigabit is equal to one billion bits (1,000,000,000 bits), or 1,000 megabits. Understanding this difference is important when comparing internet plans, managing your network needs, or transferring large files. There are 1,000 megabits in a single gigabit (1 Gbps), so an internet speed of 1 Gbps is significantly faster than 100 Mbps.
What is fiber-optic internet?
Fiber-optic internet is a broadband connection that can reach speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps), with low lag time. Commonly called fiber internet or simply “fiber,” this technology uses fiber-optic cabling and light pulses to form an electromagnetic carrier capable of sending data at faster speeds through a glass tube. We build our own networks to ensure reliability and data privacy.
Can I test my own internet speed?
Yes. Simply measure your speeds with the Sonic Speed Test and gauge the performance of your internet service. A wired connection will result in the most accurate speed test. Other devices utilizing your network can also affect the speed to the device being tested.
Do I need 10 Gigabits of fiber-optic internet?
The bandwidth of 10 Gigabits relieves any pressure on your computer or other devices and ensures that everyone in your home can access the services they need in real-time. Once you’ve installed fiber, you can shorten the data transmission of a 20 GB file by up to 90%. Speed up your computer network and trust that your connection will be consistent when you need it most.
Is fiber-optic the best internet?
Fiber-optic technology is currently the fastest, most reliable internet service available. Fiber internet increases download and upload speeds and the technology uses glass cabling to send data as fast as about 70% of the speed of light.
How does fiber internet connect to my house?
When running a direct connection to your home, we install a device on your home’s exterior wall that allows the signals to be interpreted by your fiber-optic Optical Network Terminal (ONT) which acts as a modem. This is called Fiber to the Home (FTTH) and Sonic will bring it right to your door. Check your address to see what services are available to you.
What equipment do I need to optimize Sonic’s 10-Gigabit connection?
Getting the maximum speed of 10 Gigabits requires 10 Gigabit-capable equipment. 10-Gigabit ports are required on your personal devices to achieve maximum speed. These fast speeds are achieved using ethernet cables irrespective of device location. Ethernet outperforms WiFi and achieves around 9400 Mbps with 10-Gigabit Ethernet.
Our free installation includes bringing the fiber into your home and setting up your optical network terminal (ONT). You can connect 10 Gigabit-capable equipment to the ONT directly via Ethernet cables for maximum speeds including 10G capable routers with WiFi 7 to connect multiple devices in your home wirelessly to your fast, fiber internet. You can use your own WiFi routers or rent our affordable Sonic WiFi routers by eero. We offer different solutions to find the best fit for your home. See our WiFi options here.
